I wake up early in my San Francisco apartment on the hill, and often start sketching before the sun comes up.

I am inspired by so many pattern-lovers and makers before me…Maija Isola of Marimekko, Vera Neumann and Ray Eames to name just a few. These women wanted to see the world in new ways, and there is a certain sense of optimism in that.

In every decade patterns bring joy, no matter the state of the world around us. It’s hard not to feel hopeful when you look at patterns. I think that’s why I can’t stop creating them for everything from tiny childrens’ clothes to huge neighborhood murals.

If you are a pattern lover you are a friend of mine.
